Chapter 9

I leaned over and looked carefully, measuring with my fingers. Then I met his eyes, and realized that I was less than an inch away from his face.

Both of us smiled. “I’m sorry, Owen!” I told him. “I was trying to make sure I got your sideburns straight. It’s hard without a big mirror in here.” I surveyed him again. “But you look good. I mean it!” I argued when he shook his head. “You look really handsome!” I’d brought in my electric razor to give him a haircut at lunch because he’d looked so darn shaggy. I’d taken off at least a few years of growth and now you could see his whole face, and he did look great! I patted his cheek like I did to Aric and he smiled again.

“Cute as a button,” I commented. “Here, see for yourself.” I handed him the small mirror from my purse and he studied his reflection.

“Nice,” he agreed. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” Next I passed him the broom to clean up the giant pile of hair on the floor. “I always do my son’s and my daughter’s, too, when she’ll let me touch her with a brush.” That wasn’t often enough. “I got better when I worked at the salon because the stylists gave me advice.”

“So this is how y’all spend your lunch break?” a voice asked from the doorway. “Beauty school?”

Owen flushed but I just shook my clippers at Wyatt. “I could cut yours, too,” I said, and studied his hair. It was much too long, messy and falling into his eyes, but I realized that I didn’t mind it. Actually, I kind of liked it. “I wouldn’t make it short, exactly. Just a trim.”

“I might let you, except I’m going to the airport,” he answered.

“Already?” Oh, my word. I sounded disappointed or something. “I mean, is it already so late in the day? I didn’t know how long we’d been in here, Owen.”

“It takes time to look so good,” Wyatt said to him, and Owen flushed again but smiled, too. He tossed the pile of his hair into the garbage and handed me the broom before he headed out to the yard.

I brushed gunk out of the clippers. “Where are you going this time?” I asked Wyatt. “When will you be back?”

“Louisiana and Wednesday, so not too long. Are you heading over to my house soon?”

I nodded. “I’m driving out today to finalize my to-do list and I have four people coming to give estimates tomorrow.”

“Not one to let grass grow under your feet,” he commented. He took the razor from my hand. “I’d be a little afraid to let you at me with this. You might be holding a grudge about something and I’d end up bald.”

“Well, you’ll never find out if you’re chicken.” I reached and messed with his hair in a professional way, like how I’d seen the stylists at the salon with their clients. “You got the paint out, I notice.” I kept playing with it for much longer than those stylists ever had and Wyatt stepped closer to me.
